Post-Obsolescence 01: Framework

This booklet introduces the term post-obsolescence, an anti-capitalist and anti-waste practice and ethos focused on the maintenance and repair of “obsolete” technology and equipment cast aside by corporate greed. Captured in conversation between two artists, it explores key facets of this approach including resource sharing, teaching and learning maintenance/repair, accessibility and affordability, and creative misuse—all within the landscape of planned obsolescence and the fight for the right to repair. Focused on the ecosystem of artists who use and maintain obsolete printing equipment for independent publishing, art-making, and creative misuse, this text is the first print iteration of this project. A forthcoming book-length publication seeks to elaborate on the values and tactics of post-obsolescence, with guidelines for this approach, case studies of practicing artists, a history and survey of work in this field, and a further exploration of these ideas in dialogue.
